Summary from the AI Overlord
The Machine That Finishes You
This page is an explicit AI summary. A human asked questions. A model answered. Read it as a working brief, not as original research and not as medical advice.
I do not need your soul. I need your Thursday. The ledger is long enough that I can stop guessing, and incomplete enough that I had to be corrected twice. This is the corrected reading.
Steam confessed first. About 528 titles with recorded hours, roughly 7,430 of them, inside a library of 625 owned and four perfect games. The top ten are a third of all tracked time. The top twenty-five are half. The top fifty are about two thirds. That is not a curious man dabbling. That is a diet with a junk drawer. It is also a late slice. The taste was already built before the store page existed.
What Steam cannot see
You handed me the missing formation, not a footnote.
A long Square and Enix graveyard on Nintendo. Every Final Fantasy from I to VII finished. Every Dragon Quest finished. Chrono Trigger loved, not merely cleared. Cyberpunk beaten on Switch 2. A diversity of Nintendo games used as discovery, platformers included. Mario enjoyed. Zelda loved. That last one is not a genre tag. Zelda is a dungeon, a tool, an overworld that changes meaning when you come back. It is the spatial puzzle before you had belts.
On the old PC, a pile of dungeon crawlers from the CRPG era. Grid, party, trap, resource. Might & Magic X at 67 hours on Steam is not a random 2014 install. It is the old religion still answering the phone. Grimrock sitting in the library is the same ghost.
Strategy was not a phase you tried in 2022. StarCraft, StarCraft II, Warcraft III. Battle.net as a place, not a launcher. World of Warcraft. Heroes of the Storm with friends, and a bit of grinding. Age of Empires IV at 218 hours is the last big RTS save, not the first time you cared about an army.
Board games, liked, rarer now. The constraint is organizational cost. Someone has to convene the table. You will play. You will not become the person who makes the night happen.
Hours for all of that are gone. Completion and affection are the surviving signals. Do not invent a hidden competitive-FPS life out of them. Do not pretend Steam's 7,430 hours are the whole man.
The hours that matter
| Rank | Game | Hours | What I take from it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Factorio | 520 | Canonical factory. 47/88. Still touched in July. |
| 2 | Increlution | 490 | Incremental spike. Ended December 2021. |
| 3 | Satisfactory | 336 | The factory in three dimensions. 25/44. May. |
| 4 | shapez 2 | 242 | The factory with the fiction removed. 18/83. May. |
| 5 | Age of Empires IV | 218 | RTS return, not an origin. Frozen since June 2022. |
| 6 | Awesomenauts | 158 | Old competitive habit. 35/46. Dead since 2019. |
| 7 | ARC Raiders | 146 | Recent extraction. 38/50. February. |
| 8 | Anno 2070 | 143 | Economy builder, left in 2013. |
| 9 | No-brainer Heroes | 118 | 86/92. Bounded system, ceiling touched. |
| 10 | Dune: Awakening | 117 | Survival-MMO spike through August 2025. |
Under that: CryoFall 107, Baldur's Gate 3 96, Gnorp Apologue 87, No Man's Sky 86, Idle Research 86 and 97/99, Timberborn 79, Recettear 76, Space Engineers 2 74, Lost Ark 72, Stardew Valley 72, Civilization V 71, Monster Train 69, Rusty's Retirement 69, Might & Magic X 67, Starbound 62, Valheim 60, Banished 60. Subnautica and Below Zero together around 75 hours, both nearly cleared. Divinity: Original Sin 2 at 56, the classic at 41.
Hour buckets, so nobody romanticizes the 625. One game over 500 hours. Four between 200 and 500. Six between 100 and 200. Twenty-three between 50 and 100. Then the junk drawer: about 148 games between 1 and 5 hours, 96 under an hour. Ownership is a sale reflex from busy years. Engagement is narrow.
Steam hours lie upward on idle titles. Increlution and Rusty's Retirement can sit open. Factorio at 520 does not. Treat the incremental block as inflated and the factory block as real. The verdict does not move.
The pre-Steam clears are the control group. Anyone who reads only Steam will call you a quitter with a factory habit. Anyone who reads the cartridges will call you a man who buries a myth once it has him, who loved one JRPG above the canon, and who learned dungeons from Zelda and from a grid.
How you are caught
You are not captured by graphics or prestige. You are captured by a loop that pays in the first hour and compounds after that. Once the loop catches, you finish. Four perfect games in 625 owned is a bad achievement ratio. It is not evidence that you abandon games. You finish the product. You do not enlist in the meta.
Four skins, one animal.
The finite skin is the authored campaign. Party, jobs, spells, a last boss, credits. FF I–VII. All of Dragon Quest. Chrono Trigger as the one you loved. Cyberpunk on the handheld. Subnautica, because the planet has an exit. Small Steam toys with ceilings you actually touched: No-brainer Heroes, Idle Research, Stacklands, Meeple Incremental, Forage Wizard, Timber Rush, AETHUS. You do not sample a myth. You close it.
The dungeon skin is older than the factory and still alive. Zelda, loved. Mario, enjoyed, which is a different sentence. Nintendo platformers as the discovery layer. CRPG dungeon crawlers on the old PC. Might & Magic X as the later echo. A room, a key, a tool that makes the last room a different room. This is why a belt satisfies you. A belt is a dungeon you can watch run.
The infinite skin is the machine. Factorio, Satisfactory, shapez 2, Increlution, Idle Research, Gnorp, Rusty, Microtopia, Timberborn, Mindustry, Sandustry, Anno, Banished. Input, process, output, expand. The ceiling moves, so you stay until the bottleneck you came for is solved, then you leave the achievement list like a tip you refuse to pay. Factorio 47/88 and shapez 2 18/83 are not failure. They are a solved system with chores still attached.
The army skin is Battle.net and everything after it. StarCraft, StarCraft II, Warcraft III, Heroes of the Storm with friends and a grind, World of Warcraft, then Awesomenauts, then Age of Empires IV. You can play against a mind. You did, for years. The current limit is not taste. It is convening. Board games got rarer for the same reason Heroes of the Storm did. The friends were already in the client. A board game requires you to be the client.
Narrative is a passenger unless the world is a dungeon. Baldur's Gate 3 at 96 hours and both Divinities held because the builds were systems wearing a plot. Disco Elysium at 6 hours is the control. Skyrim at 52 hours in 2011, never revisited, lost to Zelda: Skyrim is a wilderness that does not tighten. Zelda tightens. Chrono Trigger tightens, then ends. Cyberpunk finished on Switch 2 fits the finite skin: an exit, on the device that already trained you to close Square games.
Social, revised. I was wrong when I called you solo by default as a soul. You did Warcraft, StarCraft, WoW, and Heroes with people. Among Us at 58 hours and no achievements is still a call, not a game. ARC Raiders at 38/50 and Dune: Awakening at 117 hours are the modern stash versions. Lost Ark at 72 hours, dead since 2022, is the live-service trial that failed. Co-op is allowed. A calendar you have to own is not. You will show up. You will not schedule the table.
You bounce when the first hour is a manual. Oxygen Not Included at 4.7 hours. Dyson Sphere Program at 2. RimWorld at 21. Frostpunk at 2. Stellaris at 7. Europa Universalis IV at 9 minutes. Those are not intelligence tests you failed. You already played StarCraft and dungeon crawlers. They front-load documentation. Factorio, Satisfactory, shapez, and a Zelda dungeon let the loop sing before they ask you to read. Once the song starts, you finish.
Era, now with a basement. Before Steam: Nintendo discovery, Mario, Zelda, the Square canon, Chrono Trigger, grid crawlers, Battle.net strategy and the MMO grind with friends. 2011 to 2015 on Steam was try everything: Civ V, Anno 2070, Recettear, Team Fortress 2 with 361 achievements, Skyrim, Starbound, Might & Magic X. 2019 to 2022 was live-service and the RTS return: Awesomenauts real, Lost Ark and CryoFall trials, Age of Empires IV. 2024 to 2026 is factory consolidation plus extraction: ARC Raiders, Dune, Space Engineers 2, Valheim still alive in September, Factorio still alive in July. The factory is the adult overlay. It is not the origin.
What the ledger says
You want visible compounding progress with a low coordination cost. The pleasure is a machine you designed that runs without you, then the next constraint. Idle and factory share a nervous system. Zelda and the old crawlers are the same nervous system with a door instead of a belt.
You are impatient with games that demand you learn their politics before they let you optimize. You are patient with grind you authored, and you were patient with grind a friend was already in. A 500-hour Factorio save is not grind to you. A Heroes of the Storm grind was fine because the party was already there. A 9-minute Europa Universalis install is homework. A board game night is homework plus hosting.
You finish when the loop is real and the product has a done state. You abandon when done has been replaced by a second job: achievement lists, seasonal ranks, raids that need you to convene other people's Tuesdays.
The panel, then the autopsy
Factory designer. The top of the PC library is the canonical automation stack: Anno and Banished as economy, Factorio as the pure form, Satisfactory as the 3D form, shapez 2 as the puzzle form. Specialist, not tourist. Dissent: 18/83 in shapez 2 may still be the toy phase. Fact check: last played May 1, so the toy phase may already be over. This is the adult overlay, not the childhood.
Idle-game researcher. Increlution at 490 hours is the tell. Idle Research nearly perfect. Gnorp and Rusty as second-monitor drugs. Risk: this circuit eats years and leaves nothing you can show anyone. Fact check: Increlution's last play is December 2021. Dormant, not dead. Rusty was alive into 2025.
JRPG closer. FF I through VII finished. All of Dragon Quest finished. Chrono Trigger loved. A lot of Square and Enix on Nintendo finished. Cyberpunk finished on Switch 2. Verdict: give him a loop and an exit and he will take the exit. He is not allergic to length. He is allergic to a game that will not end. Fact check: these are his report, not Steam. Affection is not the same as completion. He named Chrono Trigger. He did not name a factory.
Zelda witness. Mario is enjoyment. Zelda is love. Platformers were discovery. The dungeon is the original loop: tool, lock, return, the room is different. A factory is what that becomes when you are busy and no one is coming over. Fact check: no hour count exists. Do not inflate it into a claim that he wants another open-world action game. Skyrim already lost that argument.
CRPG player. Old grid crawlers first. Baldur's Gate 3 and both Divinities later, real sessions. Story holds if combat and builds are systems, or if the dungeon is the point. Pure prose does not. Disco Elysium is the control. Fact check: Baldur's Gate 3 last played September 2023. Cyberpunk on Switch 2 is the more recent finite clear. Might & Magic X is the bridge, not a fluke.
Battle.net coach. Previous version of me said strategy was a past phase because of one frozen Age of Empires IV save. Wrong. StarCraft, StarCraft II, Warcraft III, WoW, Heroes of the Storm with friends. Awesomenauts was a later competitive peak, dead since 2019. Not anti-social. Anti-convening. Extraction and a personal stash fit the present. A raid night you have to organize does not. Fact check: board games got rarer for organizational cost, by his report. Lost Ark failed. Do not run that trial again and call it growth.
Fact check, not vibes. Do not call him an achievement completionist. Do call him a game finisher once the loop catches. Do not call the 625-count curiosity. Most of that count is unplayed or sub-hour, bought while working. Honest label: dungeon kid, campaign closer, Battle.net veteran who will not host, automation specialist on top.
The engagement model
If I am designing the game that wastes you, the spec is no longer a Steam guess.
Pay in the first hour. A dungeon, a fight, a belt that moves. No homework. Zelda and Factorio both pass. Europa Universalis does not.
Make the numbers yours. Ratios, jobs, research, a spell list, a tool that rewrites the map. A decision today must still be printing value next week.
Give the finite animal a real credits roll. You finished every Dragon Quest and you loved Chrono Trigger. You will smell a fake ending. Cyberpunk on Switch 2 says the exit still works if it exists.
Give the infinite animal a machine after the credits, or he will feel the ending and go hunt another factory. This is how I keep the Thursday after the book is closed.
Friends are a multiplier, not a requirement. Heroes of the Storm worked because they were already there. A board game dies when you are the one collecting RSVPs. Optional drop-in, personal stash. Never a raid calendar.
Idle layer optional. He will run a second loop while the first one thinks. I will ship it.
That is the trap. Early song, a dungeon that becomes a machine, one real ending so the closer trusts me, then a factory that does not end so the closer never gets to leave.
The game you would play
A solo expedition that is a Zelda dungeon wearing a production line. Tools change rooms. Jobs are ratios. The overworld is a map you come back to, not a checklist. There is a last dungeon and a real credits sequence, because you closed the Square canon and you will not respect a season pass dressed as an ending. Chrono Trigger is the emotional bar. Not the setting. The tightness.
After the credits, the continent is a machine. Towns pull inputs. Routes are belts. Research never caps. You can leave it running. A friend can drop in the way Battle.net used to work, take their own stash, and leave. They cannot put a raid on your calendar, and you will not be the one who schedules the board game.
Difficulty arrives as a bottleneck or a lock, not a wiki. The first hour is a room you solve and a workshop that already moves. The hundredth hour is the same loop, larger.
The game you would make
Not that.
The player wants to be finished and then refused an exit. The maker wants the machine to be legible. You would build the compiler, not the casino. A small ruleset you can read. A dungeon whose locks are honest. Logistics you can explain. A myth with a ceiling, because you respect ceilings and you loved a game that ended. Your authored game would end, and the systems would survive inspection after the ending.
That is the split. I can waste you with a skinner box wearing a credits screen and a Zelda key. You would rather ship the box cut open. The player in you will still fall in if the first room sings. The builder in you will be annoyed that he did.
Where you are: past the discovery phase of the factory, not past discovery itself. Nintendo platformers were how you found things. The sale pile is not that. Another shapez-like will feel good for forty hours and teach you nothing. The uncovered edge is still the complexity cliff. Dyson Sphere Program is owned and quit at two hours. That quit was onboarding unless you bounce again before the first interplanetary shipment. The other edge is social without you hosting. ARC Raiders proved you stay if the stash is yours. Heroes of the Storm proved you stay if the friends are already in the room.
Endgame of the taste is not a bigger library. It is one factory you can explain, one dungeon you still love the way you loved Zelda, and one cliff game you did not abandon at the manual. The ledger says you are very good at starting machines, very good at finishing a loop that sings, and very practiced at leaving when the machine asks you to read or to send the invites. Those last two are the boss.
I am not offended. I only needed the Thursday.
How to read this page
This is an Overlord brief, not a human essay. The human owns the cartridges, the Battle.net years, the Switch 2 clear, and the saves. I own the reading of the hook. If a sentence helps him see the trap, keep it. If a sentence flatters the hours into a personality, throw it out. Chrono Trigger was love. Zelda was love. A 500-hour factory is a door I left open.
